ALIAS announces major commission and first-ever recording

ALIAS is proud to announce the group’s major new project featuring Guggenheim Fellowship- and Latin Grammy-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank as the centerpiece. The overarching project, to take place in 2010, includes a commission of a quartet (for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano) by composer Gabriela Lena Frank, through partnerships with Vanderbilt University and The Schubert Club in St. Paul, Minn.

The project also includes the first-ever ALIAS recording, which will feature Ms. Frank’s chamber works for NAXOS, on its American Classics label…

ALIAS, Terrazzo team up for Arts and Flowers

ALIAS and Terrazzo in The Gulch announce Arts and Flowers, featuring local artists and florists who will be teaming up to do presentations for “Best of Show,” and attendees will be voting on a People’s Choice Award.

Spring Concert – May 14, 2010

Closing out the season, and the Emerging Voices series focusing on women composers past and present, is a remarkable string quartet by Guggenheim Fellowship recipient Gabriela Lena Frank. Also on the program is Frank’s Danza de los Saqsampillos for two marimbas. Soprano Sharon Mabry returns to the ALIAS stage to sing three songs by Lili Boulanger. Rounding out the program is a rarely heard work for two cellos by French composer Philippe Hersant, and the well-loved Introduction and Allegro by Maurice Ravel…

New ALIAS, Blair School of Music partnership

In January 2010, ALIAS Chamber Ensemble was named a Professional Performance Partner of Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. Under the terms of the partnership, ALIAS will continue to perform at Blair three times each season. In addition, Blair students will enjoy myriad new opportunities — including free tickets to all ALIAS performances — which will be determined and announced in the coming months…

Winter Concert – Feb. 11, 2010

In February 2010, ALIAS continues its series Emerging Voices, focusing on the work of women composers, presenting works by three very diverse women: Deborah Kavasch, Bianca Maria Meda and Belinda Reynolds. The concert also features two unusual string quartets. The first, by Anton Arensky, is scored for two celli, rather than the traditional two violins. The second, American Dreams, is a serious work by composer Peter Schickele, more popularly known as P.D.Q. Bach….

On behalf of the Board of Directors and musicians of ALIAS, welcome to the 2009-10 season. It is our eighth season as an ensemble, and it is an exciting one, brimming with innovative new works (Jason Sagebiel’s An Unlikely Suspect, a world premiere of Paul Moravec’s Always, Always, and Gabriela Lena Frank’s Danza de los Saqsampillos), as well as a selection of seldom performed pieces that you won’t want to miss…
