ALIAS Winter Concert
Tuesday, February 18, 2014
ALIAS’ Winter Concert unveils the ensemble’s project of presenting works by Paul Moravec,
beginning with his “Tempest Fantasy”, which won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize. Moravec is the composer of numerous orchestral chamber, choral, operatic and lyric pieces. His music has earned many distinctions, including the Rome Prize Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, three awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. Frequently commissioned by notable ensembles and major music institutions, Mr. Moravec’s upcoming premieres include Amorisms, which is being commissioned by ALIAS, Portara and the Nashville Ballet. ALIAS and Portara will record Amorisms and other featured Moravec’s works on a disc that will be released in January of 2015 on the Delos label. Amorisms will be featured in the Emergence Series with the Nashville Ballet in May 2014.
Works by Ginastera, Debussy and young American composer Piotr Szewczyk round out this eclectic program.
• Piotr Szewczyk “Twisted Dances” for oboe, violin, cello and piano (2012)
• Dmitri Shostakovich String Quartet No 10 in A flat, opus 119 (1964)
• Claude Debussy Trio for flute, viola, and harp (1915)
• Paul Moravec “Tempest Fantasy” for clarinet, violin, cello and piano (2004)
Our ALIAS nonprofit partner for the Winter Concert is The Contributor, who will receive 100% of the proceeds from this performance… no strings attached.
